ANI DIFRANCO
Besides being one of my all time favorite musicians (who I have seen more than a dozen times in concert ) , Ani is , "widely considered a feminist icon, Grammy winner Ani DiFranco is the mother of the DIY movement, being one of the first artists to create her own record label in 1990. While she has been known as the “Little Folksinger,” her music has embraced punk, funk, hip hop, jazz, soul, electronica and even more distant sounds."
JOY CLARK
"Louisiana born-and-raised singer-songwriter and guitarist Joy Clark is charting her own path with her debut album Tell it to the Wind. As the youngest of five children born into a tight knit, deeply religious family just outside of New Orleans, her release is both a declaration of her independence and a love letter to the traditions that shaped her. "
I'll start out by saying - witnessing these to women sing REVOLUTIONARY LOVE together was worth driving three hours alone. I wish I had the money to be able to say, "I'll fund it, go record that - the world needs that masterpiece " - but until I find the illusive money tree - I'll make it your duty to go witness them sing this song together live while on tour.
Ani fans arrived a good hour before the show started, and I more than enjoyed just witnessing fans fill the lobby. I am always in awe of the creative outfits people put together, the stories shared about a favorite show, or deciding how many shows this night brings their total tally of live Ani shows.
Lets just say - there is no shortage of individuals who feel like Ani is a friend of ours because she's been raw and vulnerable in her sharing from her heart - allowing us to evolve and grow and experience this life right alongside of her.
Being back at an Ani show was so good for my soul. Witnessing an entire room full of humans singing along to songs that may have entirely different meanings to every one of us and yet somehow connects us all together. I have whole movies of memories in my mind depending on the song being sung.
What a fucking honor to capture these photographs of a woman who absolutely changed my life.

Getting to photograph an artist who has had a lifelong impact on the way you interact with the world is surreal as hell and truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. Here is a little blog about how I was introduced to Ani DiFranco's music and what got me hooked on a lifelong journey of witnessing her live in concert.
BONUS : Shout out to my friend Kimmy !
She drove into town to meet up with me before the show to enjoy dinner together, brought me a flower and cookies from her neighbor - all just to celebrate "Ani Day" with me. And yes, she agreed to take my photo in front of the venue like it was the first day of school... I am a lucky woman to have a friend like you xo
